Inception… Real Life or Fantasy?

Hey there Andrew Hawkes here,

hope this finds you well with enough food to keep you from being hungry and enough love in your life to keep you sane.

Inception fact or fiction?I went out with my beautiful wife last Friday night, her mother came and looked after the children and we went out for dinner and then to the movies. It has been a while since we got out like this by ourselves and it was an enjoyable evening.

Since it had been a while since we had gone to the movies there was quite a variety to choose from. We had a debate and the clear cut winner was Inception with Leonardo DiCaprio as the lead. Of course with any new release you get mixed reports as to what it was like... understanding that everything is subjective I pretty much keep and open mind when going to see something so that I can make my own mind up (ironic considering the movie). So I guess I will start by saying this... I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were, from what I saw a couple of minor discrepancies with the actually physics of some of the sequences yet all and all it was a ripper of a movie.

It is one of those movies that cause you to really think about what is happening within the plot, and causes you to think long after you have left the cinema.

Now without ruining the story for those of you who have not seen it, the movie works along the guise that memories or even secrets can be extracted from someones mind while they are dreaming. As such they enter peoples dreams while they are in the sleep state for the purpose of extraction, company secrets, codes to safes, all of this sort of thing. (and really is this any different to hypnosis?). However the question is then asked, if we can extract information from someones mind while they are sleeping, could we perhaps insert an idea for it to manifest and grow of it's own volition?

I know for a fact that people will watch the movie and tell people it is a load of rubbish.... yet the more I look at it the more I realise that it is far more fact than fiction. Sure some of the scenes and ideas in the movie are a little outside of the realm (at least for now) of possibility, yet the theology behind the concept is being practiced by millions daily. Anyone that has had any dealings with personal development, life coaching, success coaching, watched 'the secret' or even attended a personal development seminar will know what I am referring too.

Within a simple goal setting session with any coach, or at any personal development seminar you are doing just as is suggested in the Movie Inception, the only difference is that you are not simply planting a seed to watch it grow, you are actively traveling through your own personal time line to a point in time where it (the goal) has already manifested the seed has already blossomed, you are then experiencing the feeling, smell, sights, sounds emotions of how things are when you realise this goal. You see when goal setting you set the goal as if it has already taken place, this, when done correctly, then causes the brain to function in congruency with that of someone who DOES, and indeed has taken all actions necessary for the completion of said goal.

If you have yet to see this movie then go, do not waste another minute, look past the Hollywood hype and just enjoy the ride you are taken on... if you have seen it, I am sure if you look at what I have said here in an impartial light you will be able to see what I mean... perhaps you already know? (with out any direct suggestion from me)

If you have enjoyed what you have read here, or it has stirred some thoughts or feelings inside of you please leave your thoughts below, of course feel free to tweet this and share it on Facebook as well....

I am so not a fan of Leo’s but I am dying to go see this, especially after reading what you have written, I understand more now about what it is about and it sounds great! Like you we don’t get out often on our own here either, but this is definitely on my list of things to do on the weekend. I’ll be back to comment once I have seen it and can really add some insight :-)

Good analogy between the movie Inception and personality development. After the watching the movie, it made me also to think that the unconscious mind can play a great role in a person life.

It just that those agents in the movie go in a persons dream to plant an idea. But it can be done in real life even to yourself. Things such as “frequent positive affirmation”, like saying “I will definitely succeed in my business” every night before you sleep will plant this affirmation deep to the unconscious/subconscious mind which will have a long term positive effect to the decisions you made.

This is highly related to having a positive mental attitude in attaining success in anything you do.

So much of success in life is mental. The concept of implanting an idea in someone’s head during sleep is really equivalent to implanting an idea into the subconscious mind. Like Jeanine says, positive affirmations are a technique for (supposedly) doing this. I would add one note, however: With positive affirmations, the thing or goal should be expressed in the present tense. The reasoning behind this is that the subconscious mind will act to materialize that which it has come to believe. Stating a goal in the future tense implies that it has not yet been attained.

When we use memory our attention is on something that happened in the past. When we use imagination our attention is on a fabricated future possibility. Often people live in their memories or their fantasized imaginations and can get stuck or trapped in those misuses of attention.

Inception shows how the main character, Cobb gets distracted and scatters his attention, especially through his attachment to memories of his wife who has died. The movie also shows how drugs used to keep them asleep in the subconscious mind affects their use of concentrated attention. This is accurate since many drugs have a detrimental affect on our mental muscle or will.

It’s nice to know that you have time for your family because nowadays, all are busy doing their job than to their family. Like others, I do believe in the magic, magic of the dreams. That’s why, I really love to hear some legends and story of a fantasy.

Interesting take on the movie, Andrew. I felt there were a lot of real-world applications for the movie’s wild science fiction concept. Mostly that life is what we make of it…
