Well, it really didn't take much convincing. I had managed to find my way around a PC reasonably well, and I knew some pretty cool short cuts, and although I loved what Bill Gates and his team had done with Windows 7, it really wasn't quite up to the task that I was asking of it. I mean when Adobe Encore is not compatible with an Operating system that has just been released and you want to use to finish up a DVD project, it really is time to move on. It would seem that yes I had out grown the capabilities of my PC... as much as I loved it, I would no longer settle and be frustrated with a PC.
So I went to visit the apple store... and of course they asked me what I was going to use the Mac for and I told them, the thing is I really knew what I wanted, they didn't have to try and convince me of anything. I wanted a computer that was not going to have a hernia every time I wanted to open up more than one application at at time. I wanted a computer that had plenty of memory and the processing speed I needed to complete projects I was doing and of course future projects. And I wanted to be future proof. I wanted a Mac, plain a simple.
I had so many associates friends and associates that had switched to Mac that I felt a little left out. They would tell me tails of how quick and easy things were on a Mac... Could it really be that different? Umm.... Yeah it could and it is!
My god from the time you turn it on you are getting an experience! From outstanding customer service at the apple store to the easy and readily available tutorials on line, not to mention the FREE in store work shops to help you find your way around. It is safe to say that it took all of a Day (if that) to feel totally familiar and at home on the Mac. And I think what they say about once you go mac you never go back is right on the money!
That being said there were things that I was always able to do with a PC that had become second nature that took a little figuring out with a Mac. On the normal keyboard with a Mac you get pretty much all the same old options you had with a PC, however with the Bluetooth keyboard there was some functionality that was missing. Like the home and end keys. There isn't any.... so how do you navigate to the end of a sentence if you had to go back to the middle with out using your mouse, now this may sound like something very trivial, and to be fair it is.... however when you come to use this function almost by the hour is becomes frustrating when you can no longer do it. So I did what anyone would do, I 'Google'd' it, you know what, I could find almost everything else, yet could not find anywhere that showed me what shortcut or hot key to use to send my cursor to the end of the line I was working on. I found how to get to the bottom of the doc, or the end of the doc, but not to the end of the line. Now thinking back to a PC I thought, well they are similar functions on a PC so maybe they use similar hot keys on a Mac... well low and behold.. what do you know, it was. So I can now say that to use the end function to get to the end of the row you are working on all you simply do is hit command and the right arrow key and what do you know, to go to the start of the line you are working on your simply hit command left arrow key. Simple right? Well I thought it was.
It is safe to say that the user-friendly interface has certainly won me over and with all the features and none of the hassles that come with a PC I am wondering how long it will be before Apple and the Mac will be THE dominant force in the home computing world.
I guess that last statement could come down to one of price... yet I thought echoing in my head saying that you get what you pay for... you pay peanuts... you get monkeys.
Anyway, things to do, people to see, have a great week
